Hughes and Mckay

Langston Hughes and Claude Mckay

Hughes and Mckay's writing were both similar in a way but also very different. Each of the poets had a different way to express their poetry. Mckay wrote in a sonnet style which was also used by shakespeare. This made Mckay look higher in class. Hughes did not have a specific style in which he wrote in. He would just write anything in different styles of poetry rather than one specific style. Mckay's writing seemed to be more formal than Hughes's poetry. Langston Hughe's seemed to be more personal in his writings. Both of these writers also share a common ground. They were both writers in the Harlem Renaissance. Mckay would talk about how much poverty the black community faced and how his stories would talk about prostitutes (Jerco and Roseline) and their lack of ability to keep alive. The story of Jerco and Roseline explained the fact how they tried to keep alive and trying their hardest. They got into this situation and was a fight to get out of it. Mckay would write about the horrid situations that the black community faces. On the other hand, Langston Hughes explains the hope thats left in the black community and all of the opportunity. Both of them had similar topics in their writing. Overall the topics were similar in the connection they make between the races, black and white.

Very good blog Sarah! I really like how you discussed about how McKay writes in a style like Shakespeare. I also agree with how you said it made his writing look more formal than Langhston Hughes.
