The Value of a Female Hero

Blabbermouth gives Haroun a piece of feminist advice. She basically says that girls aren’t able to be strong (or heroic) characters because of the ways people stereotype them. Think about contemporary female heroes. Do we have any? Do we value the fact that they are female?

The female heroes that we have today are different than what we would like to think. When we hear or see a movie about a hero, we think about men who are the strong, buff heroes. The ones that save the girl at the end or the ones that are able to fight off a strong power or anger. We don't really think of heroes as females because we stereotype heroes as certain men. I believe that we do have female heroes but they are just not as values as our male heroes. Two female heroes that stick in my head as heroes are Superwoman and Mulan. I think that these are female heroes like the heroes we have today. We also have female heroes in our society today. One of the heroes that comes to mind is Oprah Winfrey. I think she is a contemporary female hero because she shoes all the heroic attributions and achievements one would achieve to become a hero. Her best gift is the gift of giving. She is one of the most well known people for being able to give so much of her time and money away to the people who need it. In our society, I would agree that Oprah Winfrey is a hero.

I think that it is hard for people to think that women could have the possibility to be heroes because many people get the idea that being a female, you are suppose to take care of your man, not the other way. In many movies, the women "heroes" are made out to look sexy and good looking so that men will be attracted to them. They don't pay attention to the fact that this women is a hero, but they pay attention to the fact that all of these heroes have to be good looking women.

Underground man's actions

Blog- Comment on the underground man's actions. How is acting here in relationship to the claims made in part 1?

The underground man has definitely changed from one man to another between the two parts of the book. In the first part we come to understand that the underground man is a man of acute conscience from his actions. He is always doubting himself and asking, "what else could I be doing in this situation?" He always over thinking on the situations he seems to get stuck in. He also goes back on forth on certain decisions. His decision to get back at the man by hitting him in the shoulder as he walked by took weeks to plan. He would get the confidence but then over think and back down. He then talks about what an active man is like and how they are viewed. The active men are men who just do things and not making the outcome overpower his decision. We then come to understand that he was right, he is a man of acute conscience because of his decisions. We start to see this because of his actions at the diner party. He literally invites himself to his old high school friend that he is not fond of. When he arrived at the party, the men there were making fun of his clothing and his job. He then gets mad and gets angry with them but goes with them to the whore house. If he was an active man, he would get up and leave the situation, but he was too into himself and the people there to leave. He keeps thinking to himself how he wants to hit zverkov because he mad him mad but then thinks about the outcome of the situation and backs down. He has showed some difference in part 1 and part two. We finally start to understand how he explains himself as a man of acute conscience then an active man. I think that even though the underground man would want to be an active man, his actions won't ever lead towards that.

The underground man

Who is the ‘underground man’? What are your first impressions of him?

The underground man seems very curious to me. So far, he known to be a middle aged man with a liver problem which he doesn't pay attention to. I think the impression he is giving off when he refuses to go to the doctor is a bit childesh. He does go to the doctor and understands he has had this disease for 20 years but yet will not get it fixed. He wants people to think he is a tough guy who can deal with problems, but really can't. He seems to be alienated from the people and things surrounding him. He gives off the feeling that he is better than everyone and his ideas are much more better than the people around him. He also seems very indecisive about his decisions. He know that he is very educated and has knowledge which might make him think he is better than other people.

Blog Who is Rooster? What are your first impressions of him?–

Roster is a federal marshall who Matty wants to help capture her fathers killer. At first, i thought poorly of him and thought he was going to be an annoying character in the movie. We first see him when he is in charge of criminals kicking them off the wagon into the jail house. Matty ran after him because she wanted to see if the man she was looking for was in that group of men. Rooster simply ignored her and shut the door in her face. So, this incident makes me think of Rooster as a poor and inconsiderate man. Throughout the movie i do think that Rooster has changed my mind. His personality is easy to get used to because he is a drunk and he doesn't care about what other people think of him. In the end he does help mattie and it does show that he is considerate.

emotions

· Aristotle teaches us that all tragedy should lead to catharsis. Now that you have finished the play, how do you feel toward the characters? Are you sorry for Othello? Enraged at Iago? Do you pity Desdemona or Cassio? What emotions of your own – if any – has the text helped you process? Can you imagine anything in your life that is similar to what has transpired here?

From the beginning of the play my emotions have stayed the same as they are now. I honestly feel angry at Iago for doing such a thing and ruining lives of the people around him. I feel like what Iago did was very much uncalled for. Even though he did it out of revenge, he caused a lot of drama and pain between the characters.

I feel extremely sorry for what Othello was put through. Othello being as gullible as all of the other characters was much more hurt then the rest. The pain of betrayal was making him physically sick. He had cared about Desdemona so much that even such lies would cause Othello to become jealous of something that Desdemona hadn’t done. But, I also feel a little upset with Othello in the fact that he did not give Desdemona a chance to tell him the truth and that she could prove herself that she had not been cheating on him with Cassio. Iago had planned this out so well that Othello didn’t even take the time to reevaluate the situation that he was being put in.

Yes, I think I would say that I am angry at Iago. Like I said before he had caused so many problems and deaths between the characters just because he wanted revenge against Othello. I am also very angry that all the characters believed and trusted Iago. He fooled everyone, but yet made everyone believe he was the good guy. I don’t like Iago at all!!!

I wouldn’t say anything in my life is similar to what had happened with Iago and Othello. I would have to say that jealousy and revenge were the biggest factors of the play and yes both of those play a big role in high school. But nothing like what happened between Othello and Iago.

Iago's plan

Explain Iago’s plan as it stands at the end of Act I. After reading the beginning of Act II, do you believe he will be successful? What is leading you to your conclusion? Iago’s plan is to breakup Othello and Desdemona. He is doing this for Rodrigo and for himself because he is against Othello. He is against Othello because of fact that he thinks Othello slept with his wife so he wants to get revenge and take away his wife for Rodrigo. He is only helping Rodrigo because he has a chance to get revenge on Othello and he thinks this will be the perect plan because Iago has the capability to make Othello think he is on his side by warning him about Brabanzio coming to capture him. So, Iago is trying to get cassio fired by telling Othello that he slept with his wife. This is going to make Othello closer to Iago and try to get him believe and befriend Iago.I believe that Iago’s plan will work because Othello has no idea what is coming and does not even realize that Iago is against him.

Beowulf vs Luke

Beowulf and Luke Skywalker both follow the hero's journey and have similar characteristics, but are also very different. Luke Skywalker starts out his journey of fighting to get revenge, unlike Beowulf. Beowulf fights because he wants to and he knows he is the only hero who can defeat grendel. At first, Luke did not want to fight because he knew he had stuff to take care of and his aunt an uncle to look over. But then they get killed and Luke begins to feel the urge to fight. The way they present themselves is also different. Beowulf looks more like a hero on the outside but Luke hides that characteristics and looks just like any other person. They both went on to fight their enemy and "won". They also had their mystic weapons to fight against their enemies. Luke had his light saber and Beowulf had the sword that killed grendels mother. They both are also very brave. They know what they need to accomplish so they will do anything they can to get there. Luke Skywalker and Beowulf are both heros but also have very many similarities and differences.
